Hades wasn’t just the name of the underworld in Greek mythology. Hades was also the name of the king of the underworld and the god of death (not to be confused with Thanatos, the god of peaceful death). You might know Hades from the legend of Hades and Persephone, or even from the Hades video game released in 2020. Another denizen of the underworld? Cerberus, the three-headed dog who guards its gates!

Spirits were meant to stick around in the underworld, but of course, there were exceptions. In Greek mythology, there were three types of spirits that would sneak off to become ghosts:

Ataphoi: Souls who weren’t buried with the correct rituals.

Aōroi: Souls who died prematurely—that is, too early.

Biaiothanatoi:x Souls who were the victims of violence, such as soldiers who died during war.
